Introvert Whisperer / Be Responsible for Your Performance - Introvert Whisperer Be Responsible for Your Performance Performance management is a nerve-racking thing for both manager and employee.   It’s right up there is a trip to the dentist.   Its not a highlight to your day and depending on the situation, can be painful. Since most of us are employees, even if we’re managers, I’d like to outline a few things for you around your performance. It’s YOUR performance so it’s your responsibility. Yes, performance management should be something that all managers do early and often but unfortunately they don’t always.   No matter what type of manager you have, you have to take responsibility for knowing what the performance expectations of you are and how you are doing to those expectations.   I’m shocked at how often I speak to people who don’t know the answer to either of these questions. If you don’t know â€" ask! Which is worse: 1- finding out you’re missing expectations but have the time to turn it around? Or 2- getting fired because you failed to perform and the whole thing is a big surprise?   You have to ask on an ongoing basis like every couple of months.   Going an entire year is too long and could set you up to drive over the cliff. If they “haven’t thought about it”, then you should. One reason why some managers don’t establish expectations is that they haven’t thought about it.   Even so, that doesn’t mean that they don’t have them.   If your manager would prefer to continue to be blissfully mindless and brushes it aside as “you’re doing fine”, don’t let that be where the conversation ends.   You’ve done the job so write down what you think you should be held accountable for.   I know you may think this is doing their job, and it really kind of is, but you do yourself no favor by getting on your high horse on this.   Write your thoughts down and review with the boss. Don’t ignore the inputs. If your boss has indicated you need improvement, you need to take the input seriously.   It takes a lot energy and effort to give feedback.   No one is picking on you so don’t try to rationalize why the performance feedback should be discredited.   You may not agree with it and you may not think its fair but this is how your boss sees you and you have to take it seriously.   Also, don’t panic or over-correct.   Both reactions won’t help you. Introvert Whisperer / Sexual Harassment It’s Very Real - Introvert Whisperer Sexual Harassment: It’s Very Real I’m prompted to speak to you about a topic I’ve never written about before:   Sexual harassment.   I got into a fairly lengthy discussion with a 30+-year-old male friend yesterday.   It started when discussing Matt Lauer’s’ (Today Show anchor) termination for “inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace”. I appreciated his candor as he acknowledged that he really didn’t know what any of this meant as he personally had never witnessed what he thought was sexual harassment.   Like many people, he was left wondering if some woman was making it up or “mis-reading” an interaction with a co-worker. This issue is very real and you don’t have to go too far to find a woman who hasn’t had to put up with it at least once in their life.  I have had numerous “events” of this nature throughout my career so I know it’s very real. Most of them were repulsive but one was bad enough I’ve barely ever told anyone. This behavior also occurs with men but less frequently. First, I would like to say that I do know that there are people who have made up false accusations and are poor at reading social interactions.   I’m sure that some of what you’ve heard includes some of those people.   But like every social problem we have, you can’t disregard the problem because a few people have made false claims. What is sexual harassment? Just so we’re all on the same page, here is what the EEOC defines: It is unlawful to harass a person (an applicant or employee) because of that person’s sex. Harassment can include “sexual harassment” or unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical harassment of a sexual nature. Harassment does not have to be of a sexual nature, however, and can include offensive remarks about a person’s sex. For example, it is illegal to harass a woman by making offensive comments about women in general. Both victim and the harasser can be either a woman or a man, and the victim and harasser can be the same sex. Although the law doesn’t prohibit simple teasing, offhand comments, or isolated incidents that are not very serious, harassment is illegal when it is so frequent or severe that it creates a hostile or offensive work environment or when it results in an adverse employment decision (such as the victim being fired or demoted). The harasser can be the victims supervisor, a supervisor in another area, a co-worker, or someone who is not an employee of the employer, such as a client or customer. This is also the type of thing that is hard to prove and as a result, most people don’t do or say anything.   Keep in mind that when this sort of thing happens with a boss or a person of power (think Bill Cosby or Matt Lauer) the recipient of the harassment often feels powerless to push back verbally much less ask for an intervention by a company or authorities for fear of the repercussions.   It’s the perfect crime if you think about it because the bad behavior essentially gets reinforced due to lack of punishment or accountability. This is the sort of thing that can cause you to hate your job, lose your personal power and reroute your life.   Don’t inflict this on others and don’t accept it. If you are the recipient of sexual harassment, minimally you should speak up and let the offender know that it’s not ok to do or say the things they are doing.   We teach people how to treat us and if you don’t stand up for yourself you are reinforcing bad behavior, which means it will persist.   There are full-blown classes on this so I won’t get into a full course of action but my main message is to think through what would you do if it happened to you. Allow yourself enough time to retake the subject tests if necessary, but also try to schedule them late enough into your accompanying studies that you are fully prepared. If possible, take the test when youre near the end of a corresponding class. 3. Practice makes perfect on SAT Subject Tests Of course, no exam prep is complete without a number of practice tests. This is true for the SAT Subject Tests as well. While your high school classwork will act as great preparation for the subject tests, theyre not the only things you need to do. Work with the specific subject test, making sure the practice exams you choose are from the current version of the test. At the end, go through the results carefully, which will give you a better understanding of the test and your learning process. Narrow down where specifically you struggle and then focus your attention and following SAT Subject practice tests there. 4. Work smarter, not harder While there are a number of different SAT Subject Tests, they all follow similar scoring systems. Each correct answer earns the test-taker one full point, while incorrect answers subtract a partial point. If youre struggling to come up with an answer, feel free to skip a question, making a note that youll need to later return to it. For questions you simply dont know, try to work backwards, eliminating possible answer choices until you come up with a reasonable decision. 5. Look into SAT Subject Testrequirements Every SAT Subject Test requires a different set of supplies, so make sure you look into each ones details so youre familiar with the equipment required, as well as the format. Some tests require headphones and a CD player while others might require nothing. Imagine the shape of the classic acoustic electric or acoustic instruments, with the body shape like a dreadnought, parlour, or jumbo.However, certain electrics are made with a ho llow cabinet too - with their own soundhole.The hollow guitar body is often used for playing blues or jazz.But what’s the difference?Some musicians prefer this type of hollow cavity cabinet for the woodier sound it makes. And the sound resonates easier - meaning that you can play it unplugged.These guitars are often preferred by jazz guitarists. They feature two holes in the shape of an  â€œf,” similar to those found on violins, placed on either side of the strings.This is notably the case of the Gibson ES 150.Solid-body guitarsSolid-body guitars appeared in the 1950s. They are notably appreciated by rockers, who wish to minimize and control the feedback effect on the sound.This is your classic guitar sound and shape, with the pronounced cutaway, the selector switch, and the volume knobs. As we said before, this is really important to know when you are looking through different guitar brands to find your first guitar, a new guitar, or the best guitar for you.How can you learn to play your guitar heroes' riffs?Various Types of BridgesBridges hold an important role in the tonal accuracy of the instrument. It is located at the base of where the strings are attached, and connects their vibrations to the soundboard. This attaches the electric guitar strings, which come across the fingerboard, to the guitar's body.There are two main types of bridges for the electric guitar.1. Fixed bridgesThese are the most common bridges and, as the name indicates, th ey are affixed to the soundbox and can’t move. Their immobility means it isn’t possible to change the pitch of the notes that you play.The bridge holds the strings firmly in place.The advantage to choosing a fixed bridge is that the strings are better maintained and get untuned less easily. If you are not interested in massive solos or the extended techniques of the electric guitar, then this is the best option for you.2. Floating bridgesThe opposite of fixed bridges - floating bridges - can be moved with the help of a tremolo bar or whammy bar. Moving the bridge from up to down allows you to vary the pitch of notes.To obtain lower notes, move the bridge towards the top. Move it to the bottom to obtain high-pitched notes. This system is especially used by hard rock and metal groups.However, there are two categories of floating bridge.The floating tremolo bridge is entirely removable. However, the strings keep it in place.The dynamic vibrato bridge is attached to the cabinet of t he guitar by means of a screw and springs.This is a great addition to your guitar if you are interested in exploring the different effects your guitar can have. However, if you are looking for your first electric guitar, don't bother with this. Because, whilst the best electric guitar will be professionally made, cheaper versions of the floating bridge can be a bit flimsy. So, watch out if you are buying a beginner guitar package.Do you know the different playing techniques of the electric guitar?Choosing a Guitar in Terms of its NeckWhen you are choosing your guitar, pay attention to the length of the neck.  This varies according to the model you choose.Neck LengthThe average neck length is about 63 cm. This can sometimes change by one or two centimeters.Although you might think that this won’t change the acoustics of the guitar,  guitar necks affect the tautness of the strings and thus the way the instrument plays.When the neck of a guitar is longer, the tautness of the strings increases. There will be more spaces between the frets and playing will be more animated.As such, guitars with shorter necks, although their sound is less clear, will play easier because there is less tension in the strings. The frets are less spaced out, making it especially easier to play for those with small hands.Neck TonewoodAnother thing to consider is the tonewood of the neck. This is an important term that we have explored elsewhere. It refers to the different solid wood that guitars can be made from.For example, you might want to consider a maple neck - a particularly common tonewood choice - or a spruce neck.Bolt On Neck or Set NeckThere are two types of ways that the neck of the guitar is attached to the body - called either a 'set' neck or a 'bolt on' neck joint. One is bolted into the body's wood, and the other is set with glue.The DoubleAnd for the craziest players, there is the guitar with two necks for your next gig!  This, as you might expect, is called a double nec k guitar. See what she had to say about her alma mater: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options.How urban or safe is the campus?Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Molly: Smith is located in the cute, quiet town of Northampton, near Springfield and Amherst, Massachusetts. Boston is about 2 hours away by car or bus. There are 4 nearby colleges, part of the 5-college consortium, that are very easy to get to by bus, and all of the local and university buses are free with a college ID! Some people bring a car to school, but parking can be difficult, and for most people, theres no need for one. Lots of people bike around campus, though campus is small enough to walk anywhere in less than 15 minutes. Except when theres snow, biking is fun, easy, and safe and there are beautiful trails that run through campus and into the nearby neighborhoods. Campus is very small and safe and quickly comes to feel like home. The Campus Police officers are easy to reach in case of trouble, very friendly, and quick to respond (even if youre just locked out of your room). VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Molly: There are almost no teaching assistants at Smith. All professors schedule office hours when you can visit them. Most professors are very approachable and respond quickly to emails or drop-by visits. Academic advisers may be harder to keep in touch with particularly before youve chosen a major. Most professors double as academic advisers, and in my experience they take their teaching more seriously than their advising. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Molly: Smith has a very special and unique on-campus housing situation. Most students live on campus all four years, and the houses (thats what we call our dorms) are very mixed with students from all class years. Students live in houses with large communal areas living rooms with couches, desks, TVs, games, books, fire places, free boxes, pianos, pool tables, and whatever other items the house acquires over the years. Most first-years and sophomores share doubles (or triples), but almost all juniors and seniors live in single rooms. Students have the option to move to a new house at any time, but many students live in the house they were first placed in for all four years. There is a strong sense of community in the houses, and there are many events and opportunities throughout the year to show your house pride! There are kitchens in about 10 different houses, and each offers a different menu and slightly different dining hours. For example, there is a vegetarian kitchen, a kosher kitchen, an Asian kitchen, and a healthy options kitchen; and each one offers breakfast, brunch, or lunch and dinner. Dinner ends early, which can be frustrating when youre up late at night finishing a paper, but the options are very good. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported?What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Molly: Smith takes special pride in its Engineering program. Other popular majors are Philosophy, English, Art History/Studio Art, and SWAG (Studies of Women And Gender). If someone is interested in a major that is not well supported at the school, students have the opportunity to create their own major and incorporate classes from the other 4 colleges in the consortium (Amherst, UMass Amherst, Hampshire, and Mt. Holyoke). In fact thats how I completed my major in Linguistics, which is not a supported major at Smith yet! VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Molly: There are no sororities on campus though your first house might start to feel like one! Many people meet their best friends in their houses, but there are also a variety of student orgs and events where you can meet people with similar interests. And of course, you can meet some great, intelligent people in class! Students participate very actively in their House Counsels, and there are many upper-classwomen available to support the new students as they arrive and throughout their first year. The ResLife on campus is also very supportive, and there are regular, organized house activities that anyone can participate in, such as a field trip to the apple orchards, a house game night, a kayaking trip on the pond, or a popcorn and movie night. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Molly: The Career Development Office is very active on campus, and their services are available to all alumna of the college as well. I never took advantage of these services, but maybe I will in the future! VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Molly: There are many comfortable places to study in all different kinds of environments. The libraries are large and comfortable, and its usually easy to find a seat except during finals. The Campus Center also has couches and study lounges that are a bit brighter and noisier than the libraries, but lots of people have study sessions there. When the weathers nice, many people choose a quiet lawn as their study spot; and in the winter people can spend time in the botanical gardens (green house) especially a good spot for reading. There are also a number of computer labs and studios around campus for science and art students. And the common spaces in the houses are also great areas to study. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Molly: Northampton is a cute, small town that some might call hippie and Smith is right on the edge of it. Its literally a five-minute walk to downtown. There are a number of great cafes with alternative food options (gluten-free, vegan, etc.) and open-mic nights. Many people spend time in town to escape the relatively small campus. There is also some good shopping, though its a bit expensive. Its only a twenty-minute bus ride to get to any of the other colleges, so theres always something to do. There is also one club in town that can be quite popular on Wednesday nights. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Molly: There are about 2,600 students at Smith. Each graduating class is between 600 and 700 people. The student body is big enough that I never felt like there was not anyone new to meet, but small enough that you run into people you know just about everywhere. Class sizes are great I never had more than 50 students in a class, and most of my classes were between 8 and 20 students. If you know you want to end up at a big school, Smith is not it. For me the size of the school was perfect. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Molly: Throughout my career at Smith, the best class I took was an astronomy class calledThe Big Bang and Beyond. There are no Gen Ed requirements at Smith, and I took this class completely on a whim, since it had nothing to do with my major. It was a theoretical class about the nature of the universe and different theories that led up to and have followed the Big Bang.While I cant claim to remember the details of the theories we studied off the top of my head, I find my thoughts still often drift into vast space, wondering whether our universe is expanding, contracting, or situated snugly in scalar field valley, one of many in a series of universe pockets. I am still awed by how this professor presented complex theories in such a way that they were accessible to me and still resonate in my post-college life. VT: Anything else a prospective student should know? Molly: If you are hesitating about attending a women's college, Smith or otherwise, my advice is: go for it!My sister and I both attended women's colleges - mine on the East coast, hers on the West.There are so many opportunities to participate in anything and everything in an amazingly positive environment.
